Success Spotlight with Anne Baker: Makeup Artist How do you define success? To me, success is something that totally varies from person to person. I think that I’m successful when I’m happy. I think that I’m successful when I’m doing what I love. Makeup artistry, as a career, is mostly centered around making other people feel beautiful and happy-and that’s another thing that makes me feel successful. I love to make people feel good about themselves. I also believe that success is built around taking the challenges and obstacles that are placed in front of you and not only conquering them but learning from them to use to your advantage. For me, success also ties into feeling that my work is appreciated by others-it feels good when people acknowledge your hard work. I have so many interests in life, and makeup artistry is just one of them. I don’t like to limit myself and I think that is something that will help me achieve the success I’m looking for. All in all, success to me is doing the best I can every day to better myself and others around me. When did you realize that you had a talent for being a makeup artist? I have loved makeup since before I can remember. But I wasn’t always good at it. My passion for art and love for knowledge is really what pushed me forward, and still does today. It wasn’t until this year that I realized that something that I love to do in my free time could turn into a potential career. I decided to put things into motion and I am definitely proud of my success so far but I still have so much to learn-which is the exciting part. I have come so far from where I started and still have so much room to grow. Check out Anne's amazing work featured in Buzzfeed: This Instagram Makeup Artist Turns Herself Into Terrifying Creatures What have you done and what you do you plan on doing to achieve your goals? I think the hardest part is starting. You have to put yourself out there in order to achieve your goals and that can be scary but it is so necessary. The first thing I did was start my Instagram page. I had no idea what I was doing but I knew that I would get the hang of it eventually. For me, constantly producing some sort of content is key. People need to see what I can do and they expect to see it frequently on social media. But Instagram is just the beginning for me. In order to grow my business I plan on creating a website and starting a YouTube channel. These are things that will help get my name out there and help me to grow. I take things step by step because as they say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” I know that my success and progress will come with time as long as I am persistent. What is your biggest failure and how have you grown from it? I don’t think anyone likes to fail and I’m no exception. Although, to be honest, I can’t really think of a time that would be considered my biggest failure-but that is not to say that I don’t fail sometimes. I think the reason I can’t think of a specific moment is because I take failure as a challenge to get better. I don’t sit around in sorrow because it didn’t go well. Failure lights a fire in me that makes me want to do better and be better. I fail all the time, but I think just like with anything in life it’s not about the fact that you fell; it’s about how fast you got up. I try and let failure be a lesson that will propel me forward toward success. I guess that makes things a bit paradoxical because I don’t think you can have success without failure. What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? The best piece of advice that I have ever received is to always do what I love. I think that no matter who you are, at the end of the day the ultimate goal is to achieve happiness and I think that if you are constantly doing what you love that goal will be a lot easier to reach. There are always hardships but having a passion for something that drives you can get your through those hardships and give you the ability to come out on top. What makes you happy? People make me happy. My family and friends make me happy. Loving people makes me happy. Being successful makes me happy. There are so many things in my life that make me happy and I am so grateful for that. I think that if I can always find something in life that makes me happy, than even the darkest times won’t be so bad.
