Now watch me whip, now watch me nae nae.

Talk about an amazing first half to the month. I have a completely newfound appreciation for the art of hip hop and the people that dedicate their lives to it. Not only is it incredibly challenging and requires an immense amount of discipline, but it is a great workout.  My trainer, coach, and motivator for the month is Brittany Glodean and she has been incredible. She has been an amazing and confidence boosting coach so far and I couldn’t be happier to have her helping me out on this journey.
For the month of February, I met with Brittany to discuss my ideas for the month. I wasn’t sure how much or how quickly I would be able to learn some of the moves, but after a short conversation, we realized we needed to go big or go home. As part of My 12 Month Journey, the only real choice was to go big. We decided that we were going to film to short videos and then have a final challenge that would consist of a longer routine to a popular song. After the first half, we’ve completed our first video and boy, was it awesome. You can see it here: Hip Hop Team Jake Kelfer and Brittany Glodean Hit the Quan.

First half takeaways:
  1. Hip-hop is all about letting loose and having fun. Obviously, there’s more to it, but for beginners like me, half of the challenge is to feel the music and not worry about looking like an idiot. Once you get over that initial worry, the rest is a blast.
  2. Having a teacher that believes in you and encourages you can make all the difference. I know I am not an easy subject to teach hip-hop to, but Brittany has made every session so much fun. Whether it’s dancing or anything, find someone who you trust and believes in you.
  3. Everyone has his or her own style of dancing. No matter how common the move or routine, everyone has to add his or her own flair.  Just like in life, don’t be afraid to show your personality and stand out from the crowd. Hip-hop has really helped show me that even though I am not the best dancer, I can add my own unique style and still have a great time.
If you liked my first video, get ready for what’s to come because it is going to be wild.

If we did a final celebration class that was open to the public, would you want to come? Please let us know and we might be able to arrange a class for everyone interested.
