Welcome to Part 1 of a 3-part internship series. For my next three articles I am going to break down different benefits of internships so you can maximize your experience and set yourself up for your future career success and enjoyment. People often talk about the value of an internship. Some people say they are pointless. Others will stand by them forever. Personally, I think internships are massively valuable and a huge part of someone’s professional development. I don’t think every internship you do will be amazing, but I do think every internship is valuable and provides you with actionable and valuable takeaways. LinkedIn is the #1 online platform for business networking. This article is designed to help you maximize your LinkedIn experience and create extraordinary relationships.
1.Figure out who you want to connect with. The first step in building a relationship on LinkedIn is identifying who you want to reach out to and why you want to reach out to them. If you are in the job searching process, you might want to reach out to someone who works at a company you are interested in or who has the job you want. If you are looking to expand your network, you might connect with someone who is more experienced than you or someone you follow on another platform. You are going to have to find a way to separate yourself from everyone else and one of the best ways to do that is by doing what other people won’t. Think about it. If 50 people send in a resume and only 3 reach out to set up informational interviews and get to know the employees, who is going to stand out more? Before you read any further, I want you to know that no matter how much experience you have and no matter where you are on your journey, you can do it! How do I know that? Because I have seen people do it time and time again. One of the most stressful words and topics in society, yet most people aren’t taught the most effective way to obtain a job, especially one they are passionate about.
This is what most people think is necessary to land the job they want.
Yeah, we’ve all been there. A lot of sites and people make it seem like all you have to do is apply online to a bunch of jobs and eventually you’ll get a response and get hired. Unfortunately, that is not the case. While these online platforms are absolutely fantastic resources, they shouldn’t be your entire job searching strategy. If you like this post and want to learn more about how to break into sports, click here and receive your FREE guide titled “A Quick and Powerful Guide to Breaking Into the Sports Industry.” We all know how important a resume is. We all know the resume is often the first time a recruiter has the chance to become familiar with a candidate.
What we might not know, though, is that according to Business Insider the average time a recruiter spends on a resume is 6 seconds. Yes, I said 6 seconds which is hard to believe. So if your resume does not pass the recruiter’s eye test, your resume goes from the “maybe” pile to the “see you later, we are never hiring you” pile. That is why first impressions matter so much. In the wise words of Will Rogers, “You never get a second chance to make a great first impression,” and this is true for your resume, the first time you meet someone and during the interview. It is your responsibility as a sports biz professional to keep this in mind as you look for you first internship or third full-time job. Sports recruiters and hiring managers get hundreds or even thousands of resumes because everyone wants to work in sports. Because of that, they have less time to go through resumes which means… APPEARANCE MATTERS. To make it easier for you, I’ve created The Appearance Test, which will help you and your resume become more desirable and increase your chances of moving on in the hiring process. Click here to read to full article. When we get to an interview we have a choice to make. Do we take out our phone, scroll through social media and take office selfies? Or, do we turn off our phone and get ready to crush the interview? We live in a society where we spend hours a day on social media trying to get the latest news, and that’s great, just not when you are about to go into an interview. If you want to receive 5 FREE chapters from my new book, Elevate Your Network, please click here. The first impression you make is when you walk into the office, not the interview room. Use this as a chance to impress everyone you encounter! Instead of being on your phone while you wait to be called in, here are 4 things you can do to pass the time and help you land the job: 1. Say hi to everyone who walks by 2. Chat with the receptionist 3. Practice your answers to common interview questions 4. Visualize success and get mentally prepared Read the rest of the article here!
THANK YOU! Two of the most powerful words in the human language… One of the most important pieces to networking, and the job process, is the thank you note. Every time you conduct an informational interview or do an onsite interview for a job, you need to send a thank you note. Thank you notes should be sent no later than 24 hours after your interview or conversation. These thank you notes are crucial to your success and your ability to further your relationship. I can’t stress enough the importance of writing a genuine thank you note because if you don’t write one, not only are your chances of getting hired lower, but your chances of continuing to develop the relationship are lowered. A thank you note takes all but 5-10 minutes to craft, but it can make a lasting impact. Here are the 4 essentials to include when crafting an excellent and memorable thank you note. 1. Thank the person for taking the time to speak with you 2. Mention one idea you learned or enjoyed 3. Mention one message you will take away and apply to your daily life 4. Thank the person again and let him/her know you will be in touch Read the rest of the article at Front Office Sports here.
The job process can be tedious, difficult, overwhelming, confusing and intimidating. However, if you know some of the facts that impact hiring decisions, you might be able to make the process a little bit easier and less confusing. You might even be able to make it more enjoyable knowing that you can make a plan to attack the process. So check these facts out...They might just change the way you approach the job hunt. 1. 80% of all jobs are landed through networking. Networking is the ultimate key to success in all aspects of life. People are and always will be the driving force between relationships and career growth. Improve your chances of getting a job by networking and building authentic relationships. Talk to people in your network about new opportunities. Always be marketing yourself and see what value you can add to your relationships, so when the time comes you will be ready for your next career move. 2. Recruiters spend, on average, 6 seconds looking at your resume. Crazy! Recruiters don’t have time to read resumes. Take the time to make your resume easy to navigate through. Some tips for your resume are to include relevant dates, be consistent, check spelling and grammar, use basic fonts, keep your text to size 11 or bigger, and utilize the bold, italic and underline features. Looking for a boost to help you in the job market? Check out Elevate Beyond: A Real World Guide to Standing Out in Any Job Market, Discovering Your Passion and Becoming Your Own Person on Amazon! 3. 33% of recruiters admit that they know within 90 seconds if they are going to hire you. In the same time it takes you to craft a text asking someone on a date, a recruiter can tell if they want to hire you. First impressions are everything, so make sure you smile, give a firm handshake and make eye contact right off the bat. Obviously, during your interview you have the potential to change/confirm a recruiter’s mindset, but first impressions can make or break your job hunting success.
