Have you ever wondered what you should do when you first wake up in the morning? What about the last thing you do before you go to bed?
According to Jay Shetty, former Monk turned motivational icon, studies show 80% of us look at our phones first thing in the morning and the last thing we see at night. It causes our brains to constantly be ON. Most of us spend hours lying in bed scrolling through Instagram. When we finally finish Instagram, we move onto Snapchat, Facebook or Twitter, and when we feel that we are updated, we go straight back to Instagram only to realize that we’ve been on our phone for 2 hours and should probably put it away so we can actually get some sleep. Then when we wake up, the first thing we do is look at all the notifications we missed. If we don’t get any notifications, we immediately start our day off disappointed. If we do get notifications, we start our day in a frenzy trying to respond to everything and check every platform which can often lead to us being rushed causing more stress. The problem we are facing is that we all claim we want to be happier, but we aren’t taking the action necessary to make it our reality. So, what should we be doing then?

I spent the past three weeks in Las Vegas working with NBA Summer League. If you’ve ever been to Vegas, you know a weekend can be a long time. Now, imagine being there for 3 weeks.
You start to call your hotel your home. You start to know the waitresses in the local coffee shop. You start to forget what day it is until you see the crowds in the hotel lobby or the swarm of people getting ready for a night in the club. You eat the same food over and over again in the food court. But after three weeks, I can say… IT WAS AWESOME! Not in the way most of you are thinking. I wasn’t there to party and spend 3 weeks on vacation. I was there to work, to learn, to grow, to elevate, and to have fun. So rather than give you an in depth breakdown of the entire trip, here are 3 of my big takeaways. Who is the voice you listen to the most? Hear the most? Get annoyed with the most? Get motivated from the most?
If you are like most people, the voice you hear the most is the one inside your head. That voice is called your inner voice. You hear it when you are getting ready for sleep, when you are reading, when you are meditating, when you are thinking, and that’s just the beginning. Earlier this week I had the privilege to attend a Q&A with Magic Johnson at an Oracle NetSuite networking event. My good friends Easton and Kendall invited me as Kendall was the one interviewing Magic so shoutout to them!
For those of you that don't know, my family and I are die-hard Lakers fans. Magic Johnson is and always has been my favorite basketball player. His jersey was the very first jersey I bought for my bar mitzvah back when I was 13. I wore the number 32 my entire childhood to honor both him and Sandy Koufax as I mostly played basketball and baseball. To say I was excited to learn from him was quite the understatement. Earlier this week I ventured to Louisville, KY for the Kentucky DECA State Conference. It was my first DECA state conference, first trip to Louisville, and outside of the freezing cold weather, it was AWESOME! :)
When I got there I met the team and told them I was so excited to be in Louisville for the first time. Of course, I said it Lou-E-Ville and within seconds everyone was laughing or looking at me like I was from another planet. At first I was a bit confused, but then they explained that it's not pronounced that way but rather it's pronounced Lull-Vulle. Considering that I was thinking about saying Louisville in my speech, I spent a good portion of the rest of the night trying to break my habit. If you are like me, then you are a sucker for a good quote. As a matter of fact, my next book might very well be a collection of incredible and inspiring quotes on specific aspects of life... But until then, here are two quotes that I believe capture the meaning of human connection. I think when quotes like these are understood and then applied, the result can be mightily impactful. I know for me these two quotes have influenced my life in a big way and because of that I use them in a variety of ways in my speaking as well as in my book Elevate Your Network. Holy moly! We are already one month done with 2019. Next week we will be 10% done with the year.
For some of you, you're like "Jake STOP saying that. It was just Christmas yesterday. I'm still writing 2018 on everything." Others of you are like "HELL YEAH, let's keep it rolling!" My question to you is this - Are you on pace to achieve what you set out to achieve this year? MOMENTUM
We are more than 2 weeks into 2019 which means we are 1/26 of the way done with the new year or about 4%. And with the first 17 days being full of excitement and new opportunity, I wanted to share a quick tip to help you maximize your intentionality for the year. That is by picking one word to set the stage for your year. The idea behind One Word is that it helps you find a focus. By selecting just one word for the year, you can prime yourself to take action and make decisions based on this one word. There aren't any strict guidelines to dictate the word you choose. This is just one of those things that will help keep you on track to achieve your goals. It will put meaning and purpose behind your actions. I recommend writing your word down and putting it somewhere that you'll see it every day. This will help you think about the word which will increase the likelihood you make decisions based on the word. The cool thing about this is the word can be anything you want it to be. Last year, my word was CONSISTENCY. I've heard people do kindness, happiness, intention, fun, and so many more. I even heard that Chicago Cubs player Anthony Rizzo picked CONNECTION as his word for the year. In 2019, my word is MOMENTUM. Call me crazy, determined, motivated, or whatever you'd like, but I like to spend my free time watching several tv shows that help me become a better entrepreneur, leader, and motivator.
This past weekend I was up early on Sunday and decided to spend my morning with Marcus Lemonis and watch multiple episodes of The Profit. For those of you that don't know, The Profit is a show on NBC where Marcus Lemonis lends his expertise to struggling businesses in various industries across the country while using his famous People/Process/Product principle. While I was watching for entertainment, I was really fascinated by how Marcus approaches each company and its people while also focusing on how each company handles his involvement. |
